Introduction: Assessment for Learning - Acids & Bases
Access to Socrative Acids & Bases Assessment to be used in-class next day:
Create Socrative account for free at: m.socrative.com
Go to 'Manage Quizzes'
Choose 'Import Quiz'
Choose 'Import Shared Quiz'
Enter the following 'SOC #': SOC-1071158
You should have access to the quiz to use in your classroom.
Activity: Strong & Weak Acids & Bases
Students will need access to computers and the internet to complete this lesson. The class should be divided into 4 groups (depending on numbers you may wish to have 2 sets of 4 groups). These groups should be:
Strong Acids
Weak Acids
Strong Bases
Weak Bases
Students should be directed to the following site: http://padlet.com/ (formerly called Wallwisher). One student from each group will be asked to create the wall and then all members of the group should post information on their topic.
The following should be included on their walls:
What is it?
Examples
pH range
Importance
Practical Applications
Students can include pictures and links to videos as well on their walls. Students should post the links to the students walls on the course website so that students can refer to it, as they will need to review this information before completing the following activity.
Activity: Identify the Mystery Solution
In this activity, you will give each group of students (could be the same as above) an unknown solution. All solutions should be the same concentration. They will identify the solution as either a strong acid, a weak acid, a strong base or a weak base. Students will have to decide how they will identify the solutions, based on what they learned from the above activity.
Some factors they may decide to test are:
pH (using an indicator)
reaction with metals (such as Mg)
reaction with acid
reaction with base
Students could present their findings to the class and the class could decide if they agree with their statements.
Curriculum Expectations: 2.1 Use appropriate terminology related to aqueous solutions and solubility 3.6 Explain the difference between strong and weak acids, and between strong and weak bases, in terms of degree of ionization
